James Langley Memorial Trust

Supporting members of the CBSO Youth Orchestra

The first award under the terms of the James Langley Memorial Trust (JLMT) was presented at the Midland Youth Orchestra's 40th Anniversary Gala Concert in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, in 1996.

Since then, there have been 60 awards covering a diverse range of assistance from instrument purchases to tuition fees and support for attending music college.

Only with the help of the JLMT award could it have been possible to own a violin bow of such great quality. I now find that I am able to produce sounds far beyond that of my old bow. Thanks to the JLMT’s generosity, my ambition for higher development and future hopes to become a professional violinist are on track.
Natsumi Richardson, 2019 recipient

“The JLMT award enabled me to purchase a full-size violin. I am looking forward to taking part in orchestra at university, and exploring more exciting and challenging repertoire.” Godfrey Leung - 2019 recipient

“The JLMT award has been very beneficial as it has helped me buy my own Cor Anglais. Owning my own instrument means that I can develop so much more quickly. This is a vital step in my pursuit of a professional career as a performer, and I am very thankful.” Catrin Round - 2019 recipient

“I now have a flute of my own to last for many years to come, through music college and beyond!” Alanagh Bohan - 2018 recipient

“I’m so thankful to the Trust for all their support which has enabled me to take up a postgraduate course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.” Georgiana Hughes - 2017 recipient

“The James Langley grant has given me a much brighter future for musical education, not only helping towards the purchase of an instrument but also providing confidence for further fund-raising.” Sarah Clear - 2009 recipient

“The award has been invaluable to me and went towards purchasing a new bow before entering Birmingham Conservatoire.” Alexandra Williams - 2007 recipient

“The award is absolutely vital for young musicians, especially those concerned with saving for university… I do not exaggerate when crediting the James Langley Memorial Trust with changing the entire course of my orchestral vocation.” Angela Moran - 2004 recipient

“The JLMT award enabled me to continue to study the bass clarinet with a top quality teacher, and I continue to enjoy making music to a high standard.” Joy Johnson (née Pierson) - 2002 recipient

“The JLMT award enabled me to continue with violin lessons in my third year at university, and I'm very grateful to the Trustees for giving me this privilege.” Georgina Williamson - 1999 recipient
